BAAA look at a key feature of BAA's businessIn an age of heightened risk of terrorist incidents and with an average of one plane taking-off every 45 seconds from a BAA-owned airport, safety is a core requirement underpinning all BAA's activities. This is especially true when you consider that it's not only the aircraft themselves that are using an airport, for example many ground vehicles are moving around the roads beyond security access posts. Safety workers carry out tasks such as removing debris from runways, clearing birds from the vicinity, checking runway lights are working and so on. In addition, one third of BAA's 10,000 staff work in security. A fire service of 450 staff, operating more than 50 fire appliances, receive more than 300 hours of staff training in the course of a year; helping BAA to cut their fire response time from its target of three minutes to less than two and a half minutes. |
