BAACan you give me an example of human resource management at the company?A good example of how BAA responds to human resource management issues was the threatened industrial action planned by Amicus and the TGWU in December 2002. The case study is also an excellent example of the reasons why companies prefer negotiating with one trade union, rather than many. Firefighters and security staff at BAA's seven UK airports announced plans for six one-day strikes, which would have affected many Christmas travellers. BAA had to conduct negotiations with two unions: the TGWU and Amicus. Firstly, the company came to agreement with Amicus. The action was over a two-year pay deal which offered average increases of 6.3% over that period. What follows is the three versions of the pay deal. The first is the one that provoked the threatened strike, the second version was agreed between BAA and Amicus. The third version brought to an end the threat of industrial action by the TGWU. At the time of writing, staff representing the two unions can expect to receive this final version of the pay deal. |
