UK OperationThe Day Chocolate Company's offices are based at Tower Bridge in London, headed up by MD Sophi Tranchell (former MD of Metro Tartan Distribution). A dedicated team of marketing and sales staff excel in innovatively gaining new listings and encouraging supporters around the country. The Divine Supporter is a quarterly newsletter updating Divine and Dubble fans on latest news as well as spurring on new activity. Subsribe at http://www.divinechocolate.com. Enthusiasm is infectious and the supporter base is rapidly growing with everyone from the Women's Institute, staff at the BBC to Students and the Scottish Parliament backing The Company. As Sophi Tranchell explains "The UK chocolate market alone is worth approximately £3.6 billion a year: if Fairtrade products can capture even a small proportion of that market, producers in developing countries gain real benefits."
The Ghana OperationKuapa Kokoo is based in Kumasi. Alongside aiming to empower its members, Kuapa Kokoo prides itself on its democratic nature and all decisions affecting farmers are made by elected representatives. The company consists of five parts. Kuapa Kokoo Union is made up of village societies that elect representatives at regional level who in turn elect representatives for the National Union. The Union then oversees Kuapa Kokoo Limited (the trading arm), the Farmers' Trust (which is responsible for distributing money generated by the Fairtrade premium to community projects), the Credit Union (which provides credit and banking services to the farmers) and The Day Chocolate Company. Mr Ohemeng is the Managing Director, he like all other members of Kuapa staff has come from a cocoa farming background. This is a deliberate policy which ensures that the Kuapa staff are trustworthy as well as accountable. Evidence of Kuapa Kokoo's success can be seen in the lengthy waiting list of farmers wanting to join the co-operative. Managing the growth of the co-operative is one of Kuapa's challenges for the future. For more info visit: Divine Chocolate's section on Kuapa Kokoo and the Kuapa Kokoo Web site. |
