What is your field of operation?
The Day Chocolate Company is a unique North-South partnership leading the way in bringing premium quality fairly traded chocolate - Divine and Dubble - to the mainstream British market and working with organisations and individuals in the private, public and voluntary sectors to raise awareness of fair trade. Small-scale cocoa growers in Ghana own one third of The Day Chocolate Company through their co-operative Kuapa Kokoo and are represented on the Board of Directors, taking an active part in the leadership and development of the company.
The chocolate market in the UK is worth ~£3.6 billion yet world market prices for cocoa fluctuate widely; often deemed, by independent fair trade labelling organisations, to be well below the 'minimum' required to grow cocoa in a sustainable way. The trend towards corporate concentration means just five global companies make up more than 60% of all chocolate sales. Furthermore, the value of a product is in the brand and not the commodity.
That is why we have established ownership at the heart of our proposition. By owning shares in a UK chocolate distribution company, Kuapa Kokoo have direct access to the market and can have an input into how the products are marketed and perceived by consumers, together with a share of the profits.
By redefining chocolate consumption to connect people at both ends of a transparent trading chain, we aim to be a catalyst for the industry - offering a viable system of trading which guarantees a reciprocal reward: a fair deal for cocoa growers and quality chocolate for consumers.
