What sort of people work for the firm?

DSS employ a wide range of people with an equally wide range of different skills. Some are highly trained and qualified chemical engineers and lab workers, others are supervisors working on the plant itself and there are employees who carry out the work on the process plants, i.e. production operators.

Operators are categorised on a grade ranging from Grade 1 to Grade 5 depending on their experience and competence in running the plant. The grade is also linked, in part, to their remuneration.

Operators worked on 5 x 12 hour shifts operating 24 hours a day. The shifts are from 6am to 6pm and from 6pm to 6am. Operators then get 18 days off three times a year in between shifts.

The company has changed this shift pattern and they now operate on 8 hour shifts from 6am - 2pm, 2pm - 10pm and 10pm - 6am. This change to shift patterns was not popular with some workers but the company believed it would lead to a more efficient and safe working environment.
