What is the company structure?

DSS is classed as a business unit. The way that Degussa structured the business is summarised in the chart below.

There are three so-called 'business lines' in the section in which DSS sits. These are: Pharmaceutical Engineering, Catalysts and Initiators. In the pharmaceutical and fine chemical production section, there are three sites: DSS, Wolfgang Hannau and Dossenheim. At Degussa Seal Sands, the main organisation is as follows:

Seal Sands is a cost centre. Its status as a cost centre is within the business unit that is the Exclusive Synthesis and Catalysts. This section consists of the three sites, Seal Sands, Dossenheim and Hannau. Each is a cost centre but the business unit as a whole is expected to make a profit.

In practice, the site manager points out, it is necessary for DSS to make a profit. The danger of it being simply seen as a cost centre is that people take their 'eye off the ball'.
