What quality controls does the business have?

The factory is open 24 hours a day but during the hours of 10.30pm and 6.00am work is carried out on cleaning and hygiene. All the machines are stripped down and cleaned during this time. The maintenance of strict hygiene conditions is not only a health and safety requirement it is an important part of the quality assurance procedures for the business.

In addition, tests of stored food products and finished products are carried out regularly to check for microbes and pathogens (things that cause disease such as bacteria, micro-organisms and fungus).

To help reduce such effects, staff are trained and constantly reminded about the importance of strict hygiene standards. When entering any production related area in the factory, hair and beards are covered. Staff must cross a stepped barrier, removing their shoes before hand. They then put on boots and have to wash their hands. They then put on an overall, wash their boots in an anti bacterial scrubbing wash and again wash their hands. Prior to going into the main production area, an anti-bacterial gel is applied to the hands.

Perfume and aftershave are not allowed, neither is jewellery although a simple wedding band is allowed. The reason for not allowing aftershave and perfume is to reduce the risk that it can be transferred to food through, for example, someone rubbing their chin and then touching food. Any implement taken into the food preparation area has to be monitored. For example, pens have to be shatter proof!
