Where are they located?Kettleby Foods are located on the edge of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. The building was completed in April 1999 and the facility cost £15 million. Leicestershire has an association with the food industry in that Melton Mowbray pork pies are world famous. In Leicester itself, Walkers Crisps have their headquarters and the nearby agricultural community is extensive. Local dairy producers use their milk to produce Stilton cheese. Only cheese produced in a certain area can call itself 'Stilton' and Melton itself is heavily associated with the farming community.
Given the need to employ staff in large numbers (the number of staff at Kettleby Foods is around 640) locating in Melton was not driven by strict business theory! The unemployment rate in Melton is very low - around 0.2% - so getting staff is not as easy as might first appear. The true business decision to locate the unit would have been in an area where unemployment was relatively high and where there was a supply of labour able to carry out a range of manual labour activities. However, Samworth Brothers felt it important that the business should continue its association with the area. | Index | Previous Question | Next Question | |
