When did the company start?

The famous black cabs were originally produced by a company called Carbodies. The firm occupied the current Coventry site in 1928. It made car bodies (what else?) for many of the UK's major car manufacturers including: Rolls-Royce, Austin and Triumph. In 1948, the company produced its first London cab and set the standard for future taxi design with its 1959 model, the FX4. Carbodies continued to make London taxis until they were taken over in 1973 by Manganese Bronze Holdings.
