The people who work for the Foundation must have some sympathy with the aims and objectives of the Foundation and may well be people who have personal experience in some way with the disease. There are however, a range of skills needed to run the organisation effectively and efficiently and the skills profile of the staff must reflect this.

Denise Vaughan is the Chief Executive of the Foundation. Denise has experience in running businesses in the private sector and is bringing her skills to bear on the voluntary sector. Running the Foundation involves many of the same skills as those required of leaders in the private sector.

Denise joined Meningitis Research Foundation in September 1997. At that time the charity had 12 research projects being funded, 23 staff and 2,000 members. Today the charity has 42 staff, over 5,000 members, and 21 research projects in the programme. Targeted award-winning Information and Awareness programmes are regularly run by the charity, concentrating on the groups most at risk of contracting meningitis and septicaemia. The Foundation provides a 24 hour helpline service - free in the UK and LoCall in the Republic of Ireland, giving information to the public and support for those whose lives are affected by the diseases.

Prior to her appointment Denise's career has been in Administrative and Marketing Management, and she has extensive experience in both the public and private sector.

Denise believes that research is the key to eradicating meningitis and septicaemia, and until that day, it is vital that the public and health professionals know how to act quickly and effectively in dealing with a case, and that people affected have somewhere to turn to for support.

In terms of motivation, many of the staff will get their motivation from the knowledge that the work they are doing is contributing to saving lives and improving the quality of life of those who have suffered from the disease.

Some 42 members of staff work in the four offices across the UK and Republic of Ireland - Bristol, Edinburgh, Belfast and Dublin.

When recruiting staff, a contract of employment is issued - an extract of this is to be found below:
