Who are its shareholders? The Foundation does not have shareholders. As a registered charity, the Foundation is channelling public money to different activities and does not aim to make a profit. The 'ownership' of the Foundation therefore has to be covered by different business legislation compared to that of a profit making business organisation. The Foundation is run by the Board of Trustees, who are the guarantors and directors of the charitable company. Their responsibilities are to ensure that the activities of the Foundation are carried out in accordance with its charitable status and its stated aims. Charities are highly regulated. Annual returns are submitted to Companies House in the same way as for other companies, and in addition annual returns must be submitted to the Charity Commission - a regulatory body responsible for the voluntary sector. There are currently ten Trustees who are sitting on the Board of Meningitis Research Foundation. The work of the Trustees is entirely voluntary and they do not get paid although they do receive expenses involved in carrying out work associated with their duties as Trustees. The subsidiary company, Meningitis Promotions Ltd, is a company limited by shares, the only shareholder being the parent company i.e. Meningitis Research Foundation. | Index | Previous Question | Next Question | |
