How are No. 31 Hair and Beauty's employees motivated? There are a number of problems associated with managing staff. The main principle is to try to maintain a relaxed and 'happy' atmosphere but this can be difficult. Jilly points out that egos need to be massaged, people need to feel recognised for their contribution and also to be reminded of their position in the business and their responsibilities. One important element in this process is the degree to which the staff are able to manage themselves. The staff manage their own daily appointments, often with regular customers, and as such are able, within reason, to be quite flexible in how they use their time. Lunch breaks, for example, are flexible so if staff need to go to the bank or do some shopping they can organise this around their working day. This self direction can be a useful motivational tool. Staff work from 9.00am - 5.30pm Monday to Thursday, 9.00am - 7.00pm on Friday and 9.00am - 3.00pm on Saturday. There are days off during the week so that staff only work 5 days per week. Training OpportunitiesOffering training may be one way in which staff can be motivated - training increases their skills and is an investment in the improvement in the quality of the service the business provides. The local College of Further Education provides a range of courses linked to the National Vocational Qualifications framework (NVQs). Two problems facing Jilly, however, are the lack of ambition of some staff in seeking to improve their skills and develop their careers, and also the fact that providing retraining can be expensive and the degree of loyalty by workers can sometimes mean that money will be spent improving their skills only for them to leave, meaning the business has to spend more money on training someone else. It is also frustrating to have spent money training a member of staff so that another salon gets the benefit! | Index | Previous Question | Next Question | |
