Government Lobbying
In 2003 the UK Government launched 'The Big Conversation' (http://www.bigconversation.org.uk), aimed at involving as many sections of society as possible in debating the major issues facing the UK. The TUC's own response to this initiative sheds light on the priorities the TUC identifies in the near future:
- Bring back to the labour market the 2 million people who want to work, but are not counted in the unemployment figures.
- Build a partnership between employers, government and employees, to reform the pensions system, to provide decent pensions for all.
- Training should be compulsory, led by a union-built institution.
- Quality of working life improvements should boost investment in childcare, narrow the gender pay gap, crackdown on the long hours work culture in Britain and build better rights for those in work.
- Provide greater support for UK manufacturing.
- Strengthen and expand the public sector ethos.
