September 2000 Fuel Crisis
Tax and protest.
Taxation and protest have been closely linked throughout history. The Corn Laws, American War of Independence and the Poll Tax are all examples of this. Some commentators have linked the fuel tax crisis to the Poujadists in France in the early 1950s. Poujade was a shopkeeper who created a short-lived pressure group whose aims (lower taxes for middle income groups) were never fully
achieved. Most committed Poujadists joined political parties of the extreme right after the breakdown of the revolt. The apparently universal support for the truckers and farmers stems from the huge numbers of car owners in the UK, who rightly or wrongly, see their use of the car as essential. But, as with all narrowly-focused, large- scale revolts, supporters of the blockade represent
many different views.
