Wanna Argument?
World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada): Wada Happening with Drugs in Sport?
What are sportspeople told about dietary and other supplements?
In tennis, the ATP issues a list of all banned substances to all of its professional players. It also gives guidance on supplements and provides a 24-hour hotline for players in need of urgent advice. It was found by the independent panel hearing the Rusedski case that the ATP did not do enough to ensure that players did not continue to take the ATP-sanctioned supplements. In addition, Rusedski's case was founded on the argument of 'equitable estoppel', preventing one party (the ATP) from taking action against another (Rusedski), if the first party was ultimately responsible.
The IOC has frequently warned all athletes not to use any supplements. In the UK, the organisation in charge of overall supervision of sport says that athletes must take responsibility for what is in their bodies. Sportspeople shouldn't take supplements, they say, because of widespread ignorance over what's in them. In addition, UK Sport says that supplements should be avoided because there is no need for them to be taken, as a balanced diet provides all the nutrients required.
