Party Political Funding: Paying the Politicians at Poll Time

What does it cost to be a candidate at an election?

If you want to stand as a candidate at a General Election, you must pay a deposit of £500 in each constituency (area) where you take part. If you get less than 5% of the total number of votes cast, you forfeit your deposit. According to the Electoral Commission, the number of deposits lost at recent elections was as follows:

Date of Election Number of Lost Deposits
1992 906
1997 1592
2001 1177
