The UK Housing Market: A Place of Your Own?
What about social, affordable housing?
The Barker Review found that the number of social houses built in the UK fell from about 47,000 per year in 1994, to about 21,000 in 2002. This is despite spending on social housing going up from £800 million in 2001 to more than £1.4 billion in 2003.
But Barker noted that this rise in spending was partly due to the rise in land prices and also due to the efforts of Government to improve the quality of existing social housing. According to the report, the proportion of social units below the decency threshold has fallen from 46% in 1996 to 33% in 2002.
