The Euro

Denmark vs. UK

Denmark is a much smaller country than the UK. The population of Denmark is 5 million whereas the UK population is 58 million. The Danish economy is worth $139.9bn and the UK economy is worth $1,324.4bn (OECD data for 1999 based on PPP rates) and so we are considerably larger than them. However, we are both part of Europe, so is there really any difference? The Danish Krone is currently pegged to the Euro whereas sterling floats freely against all currencies. The Danish also receive a lot less inward investment than Britain and it is large companies who have invested in the UK or are thinking of it who want Britain to be a part of the Euro.

Some commentators are also suggesting that many of the "against" votes in the Danish referendum may have been protest votes against the Danish PM - Poul Rasmussen and so this makes the real opinions of the people difficult to judge. Given that the Krone will continue to shadow the Euro anyway, it could be argued that it doesn't make much difference whether Denmark are in or out.
