Wanna Argument?

Are wind turbines catching on in the UK?

There seems to be a groundswell of support for small-scale wind energy in the UK at the moment:

  • In 2006, DIY retailer B&Q started selling rooftop wind turbines at its 'Warehouse' stores for about £1,600, including installation.
  • The government offers a 30% grant to anyone thinking of installing one.
  • Consumers will also be eligible for a green energy certificate from the state worth £60.
  • Against the backdrop of escalating fuel bills in the past two years, the promise of 'free' or subsidised 'green' energy looks tempting.
  • Of course, there's also the contribution that alternative energy schemes can make to the UK's targets of reducing CO2 emissions. The less electricity needed to be produced from burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, the lower the output of 'greenhouse gases' into the environment.
