Wanna Argument?
Tasks and information
Tasks
- From what you have read here and using some of the sources of further information listed below, find arguments in favour and against small-scale use of wind energy technology. Prepare for a group debate on the theme: 'All households should have a wind turbine; we all have a responsibility to use sustainable energy.'
- Why should individuals be interested in the payback period for investing in renewable energy investments that we might make? Why do reports suggest that David Cameron's wind turbine could take 40 years to pay for itself?
- Find arguments from the NEF report to support the imposition of a windfall tax on the profits of oil and gas producers in the North Sea. How might these arguments be countered by the oil and gas companies?
- Do you think more should be done to generate renewable energy from large-scale wind farms in the UK? Use information in the BWEA's research report into public attitudes to wind energy to support any increase in the number of these farms.
- Should Britain invest in a new generation of nuclear power stations? Make a list of arguments in favour and against this idea. Do you think that nuclear power is a sustainable form of electricity production?
