Wanna Argument?UK Farmers: Crisis Point? Is British Meat Now Safe? The food standards watchdog suggested on 10th October that BSE-infected meat could still be entering the food chain, eleven years after controls were introduced to prevent this happening. Officials fear that farmers are bypassing health checks on beef and other meats. Vets can only provide word-of-mouth evidence to support these claims, but members of the government's BSE Advisory Committee expressed their alarm at the reports. Seventy-seven people have died in the UK so far from CJD (the human form of BSE), Seven others have the same fatal disease and monthly bulletins show the number of cases rising steadily. How can this be happening when strict controls exist to protect the public? It could be because farmers are allowed to kill their animals for their own use, thus ignoring the rule banning the entry into the food chain of cows older than 30 months. |
