Football, Finance and the Future: A Bubble About to Burst?

Is the inflationary-spiral about to affect the Football League?

In June 2000, the Football League signed a £380 million deal for TV and Internet rights. Within the ninety-two professional English clubs, total income rose by 10% to £951 million in 1998-99. The entire English football industry is calculated to be worth in excess of £1 billion this season.

As the service sector continues to play an increasingly important role in the economy, so the football industry can be seen as contributing to UK Gross Domestic Product (GDP) - the overall measure of national income. Hard to think that only forty years ago, the most a player could earn was £20 a week and the game was still a bastion of working-class England.
