Big versus Small Government

What is the likely direction of government social policy?

If the Labour administration is re-elected, further targeting of groups that suffer social exclusion, (see list of groups in Link 5), can be expected. Of recent policy announcements, one good predictor may be the £3 million pilot scheme to provide young mothers with free full-time childcare, if they undergo training or return to school.

But policy commitments from the Conservative party, which has promised to cut taxes for families in which the mother stays as home, suggests that one of the main areas of conflict in the election campaigns of the future will be the type of intervention seen, rather than whether or not intervention will happen.
