Calls for restraint in pay levels in Britain's boardrooms seem to have fallen on deaf ears according to a report by the independent research group Income Data Services. The report showed that chief executives of FTSE 100 companies had a rise in their incomes of 18.3% in cash terms. Their median earnings were £962,145 compared to £884,445 the previous year. The top five executives were:

  1. Ken Berry (EMI) £2,040,800
  2. Chris Gent (Vodafone) £1,069,000
  3. Sir Richard Sykes (Glaxo SmithKline) £1,034,000
  4. Sir Clive Thompson (Rentokil Initial) £997,000
  5. Sir Geoffrey Mulcahy (Kingfisher) £967,000
