30 December 1997 Figures collated by Dun & Bradstreet, the business information group, show that in Great Britain in 1997 the number of recorded business failures, at 36,368, was 11.5% lower than a year earlier. This was the largest annual decline since 1994 and follows falls of 0.5% in 1996 and 5.0% in 1995. The fall in 1997 was the fifth annual fall in succession and brought the total to a seven-year low. In 1997 the number of larger company liquidations fell by 15.9% to 15,470 and the number of smaller business bankruptcies fell by 7.9% to 20,898.
