Statistics from the Council of Mortgage Lenders show that 32,770 homes were taken into possession in 1997, the lowest number since 1989 and 56.6% below the peak of 75,540 recorded in 1991. The total of mortgages six months or more in arrears amounted to 1. 1 % of all mortgages at the end of 1997, the lowest since 1989.
