05 March 1998 - International [Kenya] The government announces fiscal measures, including a KSh3.4 billion (£34 million) reduction in government expenditure, an increase in VAT, higher duties on fuel, collection of income tax arrears and a freeze on duty and VAT waivers. The action is designed to curb a growing budget deficit, which is being adversely affected by a multilateral aid freeze.
