Help With Using the ONS Data
Biz/ed have provided a variety of frequently used data from the ONS. Our choices have been based on the sort of standard data that economics and busiess users are likely to want. However, if you feel we have missed something then use the 'contact us' button in the left-hand navigation bar to let us know and we will try to add it.
The data is provided in two formats:
- HTML format - this will apppear directly on your screen as a web page. In most cases this will be a very large table and you may need to scroll down the page to find the figures you are after. Usually all the annual figures will be together in a block and these will be followed by blocks in the table with the quarterly and monthly data, so keep scrolling if you don't find what
you want straight away.
We would only recommend viewing it on-screen if you are planning to print the data or just need a few figures that you can note down.
- CSV format - this is 'comma-separated format and is the best way to download the data of you want to be able to access it yourself. The easiest way to do this may be to 'right-click' on the CSV data link on the main data page and choose the 'save file as' or 'save link as' option. You can then choose where to save the file.
Once you have downloaded the file, open your spreadsheet package and open the file. All the data should appear in separate cells.
