Key Resources for StudentsThe best starting point for looking for data is probably to look first at the Biz/ed data selection. We have selected key data types and made them available for either on-screen viewing or download in CSV format. If you need the data for a project we would recommend downloading it, as then you can put the data in a spreadsheet package to process it. If our selection hasn't got the data you want then try going to the ONS' Time Series Data. This is a comprehensive database of more than 40,000 time series from major National Statistics economic and socio-economic releases. It is worth investing bit of time in exploring how these sections work. If you want some more help or advice you may want to approach the ONS for some of the materials they publish. Economic Statistics The following pamphlets are available free of charge from the ONS Libraries:
The catalogue consists of a concise listing of ONS publications together with an order form. The following major ONS economic publications could be a good starting point for your project, and are described in more detail in the pamphlets above.
The Sector Reviews combine all the key economic and business data for a broad range of manufacturing and service industries. Each report contains information on production, employment, earnings, imports, exports and much more. The data is shown in tables, graphs and charts with key points noted at the beginning of each review. Social Statistics Alternatively, if you need detailed information on registrations of births, marriages or deaths, migration, population, mortality, divorce or social surveys the following major social publications contain everything you need to know:
The following publications contain a useful selection of both social and economic data and should be available in most central libraries.
Census Statistics Census data provides a valuable source of statistical information which can be put to good use in a student environment. Apart from the war year 1941, a census has been taken in Britain every ten years since 1801. By comparing one set of results with another significant long term changes in our national life can be monitored. Census results are generally published and we can provide lists of libraries which hold the census reports. 1981 and 1991 Census data are also available electronically and can be purchased on magnetic tape, diskette and CD-ROM. The CD-ROM versions, which were specially developed for schools, are enhanced by a mapping facility. 1981 and 1991 Census data are also available electronically and can be purchased on magnetic tape, diskette and CD-ROM.
