Special Note for Teachers and Lecturers

As a teacher or lecturer, it is possible that at times you will be responsible for supervising students' research projects. If you need data to support this project work, then the ONS' Time Series Data may be a good starting point. This is a comprehensive database of more than 40,000 time series from major National Statistics economic and socio-economic releases.

It is worth investing some time in exploring the Time Series Data. You can access to all the published data and you can either view it on-screen or you can download the files in CSV format. There are some further notes on CSV format below.

Timezone is organised like the published books (e.g. Economic Trends, Blue Book, Pink Book etc.). When you first go to Time Series Data, a good starting point is Economic Trends that has summary data for many areas. Keep selecting the series you want and and eventually you will come to the download page where you choose to either view the data on-screen or to download it in CSV format.

CSV format

CSV format simply means 'comma-separated variable'. The advantage of this format is that it can be read by any spreadsheet package. Once you have downloaded and saved the file, you can then open it in your chosen spreadsheet package. The spreadsheet will recognise the commas between figures and then put each of them in separate cells. You should then be able to do calculations, graphing and other processing as usual.
