Supporting Organisations in Travel and Tourism - Activity

Support for travel and tourism organisations begins at the very top of the UK environment. There is a Government department that has responsibility for tourism in this country. It is known as the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

The DCMS produced a report in July 2004 which set out how UK tourism should develop in five key areas: marketing and e-tourism, the quality of tourism products, people skills, tourism data, and tourism promotion in local government, regional government, central government and the European Union.

Access the DCMS report 'Tomorrow's Tourism Today'(http://www.culture.gov.uk/Reference_library/Publications/archive_2004/tomorrowstourismtoday.htm). This Activity involves you researching into the DCMS report in order to gain a better understanding of the organisations that provide support to the tourism and travel sector. Tomorrow's Tourism Today identifies the main organisations which provide support in the travel and tourism industry.

  1. Find out the names of each of these organisations. These are listed in the presentation or can be read on page 5 of the report.
  2. Write a brief summary of the responsibilities of these organisations. These can be accessed from page 13 of the report.
  3. What role must each of these organisations play if the DCMS objectives are to be achieved? This information is accessible from each section of the report; section 6, 7, 8 and 9. The DCMS role in championing UK tourism at home and abroad is detailed in section 11.
  4. The report also refers to the role of 'tourism's professional bodies'. Can you think of an example of one of these bodies?
