Major Transport Routes 1 - Activity

The choice of transport routes to and from popular destinations has increased over recent decades:

  • Air travel has come within the reach of many consumers. The mass market for discount airline fares and the expansion of regional airports in the UK and wider Europe demonstrates this development.
  • Major construction projects have seen improvements to the transport infrastructure. Many examples of these developments exist, including:
  • Economic and political developments have resulted in new tourism markets emerging. The expansion of the European Union (EU) and the appearance of an affluent middle class in China have both contributed to this growth.

Tasks:

Choose three countries from the list of tourist-generating areas that follows: USA, China, Germany, France, the UK, South Africa, Denmark, Hong Kong, Ireland. Alternatively, you may want to select three other countries of your own choice.

Your task is to describe the transport routes that link your chosen countries to a number of tourist-receiving areas. Pick one from each of the three lists of popular locations for tourists:

  • UK: London, Edinburgh, Scottish Highlands, English Lake District, Stonehenge
  • Europe: Paris, Rome, Venice, Berlin, Athens, Madrid, the Alps, the Mediterranean, Dalmatian coast
  • Worldwide: Latin America, China, Australia, New Zealand, India, South East Asia

Remember that you are looking to find out about the transport links between tourism-generating areas and some of the most popular world locations for tourism. This means investigating the following modes of transport:

  • Air travel including locations of airports
  • Sea travel including the road routes that connect with ferry terminals
  • Road travel including access to coach and bus travel as well as car transport

You will find the following resources useful:

  • Atlases (should be available through your Learning Resource Centre)
  • Travel brochures (ask in local travel agents for a selection)
  • Web sites such as those identified in the Reference and Research Skills Activity

In order to be considered for a higher grade than a Pass in this coursework, you will need to explain how the transport route to a popular tourist destination contributes to the appeal of the destination itself.

As a result of your research into major tourism transport routes, you should produce a report detailing your findings. Remember to properly reference the source of the materials you use to gather your information.
