Reference and Research Skills - Lesson Plan

This resource is designed specifically for Unit 4 of the Edexcel BTEC National qualification, 'Tourist Destinations', although it will be of relevance to centres following other awarding bodies' programmes.

Aim:

To begin Unit 4 with an introduction to the wide range of sources of information on travel destinations. This lesson aims to introduce students to useful sources of reference materials and highlight vital research skills. Note that the resources identified in the Activity that accompanies this lesson are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of what is available for learners. Student groups should be encouraged to read as widely as possible to avoid being over-reliant on a narrow range of resources. Educators may identify a broad list of reference sources by running a brainstorming session before learners embark on their work on this unit.

Learning Objectives:

Students should be able to use a range of appropriate sources of reference and research skills effectively in order to produce useful information, to enable them to:

  • Boost their understanding of world geography
  • Identify continents, regions and countries
  • Find specific travel information for UK and wider European travel

Specifically, by taking part in this lesson students should be able to:

  • Identify a broad range of reference sources to help boost their knowledge and understanding of travel and tourism destinations
  • Navigate around useful reference sources, identifying useful sections of reliable information
  • Generate evidence for Application of Number Key Skills

Resources:

Lesson Structure:

  1. Outline the key learning outcomes of the lesson.
  2. Go through the PowerPoint Presentation.
  3. Hand out the Activity sheet.
  4. Encourage learners to identify alternative reference sources where appropriate/possible.
  5. Support learners as they investigate the suggested sources and other alternatives they find.
  6. Ensure that learners identify a variety of countries in Task 1 by listing on a white board or flipchart those chosen.
  7. Provide help if needed during work on Task 2.
  8. Extend Tasks 3 to 5 if appropriate by asking for suggestions of other journeys about which learners can find travel information, such as timetabling, price, duration and so on.
  9. Review the learning objectives of the session.
  10. Allow time for the students to draft the promotional material required in the task.

Key Skills:

The following list summarises relevant key skills for this lesson. The list is not exhaustive, in that students will often need to tackle additional activities in order to generate evidence that is sufficient to meet the specification:

Application of number - N3.1 Plan and interpret information from two different types of sources, including a large data set

Note that task 2 provides an activity which should produce evidence for this element of key skills.
