The UK as a Destination - Introduction:
Note that this resource, including the presentation and this activity, is designed to provide material for a number of sessions. Depending on its use, the resource could suit a double session (over one week or covering two weeks' work) with additional personal study and research time set aside for completing the task.
Knowledge of the UK as a destination is crucial for people wanting to follow a career in travel and tourism organisations. This lesson is about investigating the tourism in the UK and its customers and products.
Aim:
To continue work on Unit 4 'Tourist Destinations', with a look into the major transport routes used in global travel and tourism. This is the first of two sessions on this theme.
Learning Objectives:
By participating in this lesson, students should be able to:
- Use sources of reference for information on UK destinations
- Know the location of the main UK gateways, tourist destinations and geographical features.
- Understand the appeal of UK destinations.
- Understand some of the needs of UK domestic and inbound tourism markets and ways to meet these needs.
- Make a presentation in small groups to the rest of the class.
Resources:
Lesson Structure:
- Outline the key learning outcomes of this session and point to other resources on the Learning Pathways.
- Go through the presentation.
- Divide the group into three small groups (or six, if the group is very large). Give out the relevant Activity sheet to the correct group according to whether they are carrying out work on Visit 1, 2 or 3.
- Emphasise the varied nature of sources of information for the Activity. Some of these will be computer-based (as long as an Internet connection is available). Others may be library or learning resource centre-based.
- Oversee work on the tasks in the Activity.
- Ensure that each group works towards giving a presentation to the rest of the class. This will involve the group members in assigning roles and producing material for display and handout purposes.
- Oversee the presentation of the groups' findings to the rest of the class. Ensure that all have access to the presentational materials.
- Review the learning objectives of the session.
