Products and Services for Consumers and Industry - Lesson Plan

This resource is designed specifically for Unit 1 of the Edexcel BTEC National qualification, 'The Travel and Tourism Industry', although it will be of relevance to centres following other awarding bodies' programmes.

Aim:

To learn about the products and services offered to industry and consumers by organisations in the UK's travel and tourism industry. To analyse the public and private sector efforts to market these products and services. To apply this knowledge to a practical exercise in marketing a location.

Learning Objectives:

By taking part in this lesson, students will:

  • Find out more about products and services
  • Understand that these can be provided by private or public sector organisations
  • Appreciate that often these two sectors combine to be more effective
  • Research and find answers to a series of questions
  • Create a poster or leaflet to show 'place marketing' in a major town or city

Lesson Structure:

  1. Outline the key learning outcomes of this session.
  2. Go through the PowerPoint Presentation.
  3. Give out the Activity sheet and check to make sure the students understand the meaning of the term 'place marketing'.
  4. Support and guide students through their investigations of the key Web resources identified in the Activity.
  5. Support individuals as they work through the individual tasks.
  6. Review the learning objectives of the session.

The following list summarises relevant key skills for this lesson. The list is not exhaustive, in that students will often need to tackle additional activities in order to generate evidence that is sufficient to meet the specification:

Communication Level 3 - C3.1b Make a presentation about a complex subject, using at least one image to illustrate complex points.

The students' posters or leaflets constitute a presentation task. This could be extended into a more formal presentation at this stage or later in this unit.
