Roles and Responsibilities of Organisations - Lesson Plan

This resource is designed specifically for Unit 1 of the Edexcel BTEC National qualification, 'The Travel and Tourism Industry', although it will be of relevance to centres following other awarding bodies' programmes.

Aim:

To investigate and analyse the roles and responsibilities of organisations in the UK's travel and tourism industry. The lesson will focus on one of the main business organisations in the industry; it will also look at the protection that the industry provides for when things go wrong.

Learning Objectives:

By taking part in this lesson, students will:

  • Carry out research and synthesise information from a range of sources
  • Review the types of organisation in the UK travel and tourism industry
  • Carry out some research into one of the main firms in the industry
  • Find out what happens when travel and tourism organisations fail
  • Analyse the inter-relationships that occur in travel and tourism
  • Work independently on a series of written tasks

Resources:

Lesson Structure:

  1. Outline the key learning outcomes of this session.
  2. Go through the PowerPoint Presentation.
  3. Give out the Activity sheet.
  4. Support and guide students through their investigations of the key Web resources identified in the Activity.
  5. Support individuals as they work through the tasks.
  6. Review the learning objectives of the session.

Key Skills:

The following list summarises relevant key skills for this lesson. The list is not exhaustive, in that students will often need to tackle additional activities in order to generate evidence that is sufficient to meet the specification:

Communication Level 3 - C3.2 Read and synthesise information from two extended documents about a complex subject. One of these documents should contain at least one image.

Students are likely to be performing the above skill when they are accessing and reading the CAA report to Government in research task 3. The task is likely to involve analysing the table in the report. The second document could be the 'Stranded' article which, though short, does meet the complexity criterion.
