Marketing in the Travel and Tourism Industry - Lesson Plan

This resource is designed specifically for Unit 3 of the Edexcel BTEC National qualification, 'Marketing Travel and Tourism Products and Services', although it will be of relevance to centres following other awarding bodies' programmes.

Aim:

To begin work on Unit 3 with a session on Marketing.

Learning Objectives:

By participating in this session, students will:

  • Understand more about the marketing process in travel and tourism
  • Understand key terminology
  • Be encouraged to use the Web to find useful marketing resources
  • Understand how regional bodies develop marketing strategies for tourism development
  • Practice market segmentation techniques
  • Develop skills in SWOT analysis

Lesson Structure:

  1. Outline the learning objectives of the session.
  2. Go through the PowerPoint Presentation.
  3. Hand out the Activity sheet.
  4. Guide learners through preparing for the task. This is probably best carried out in pairs, with support at key steps in the tasks.
  5. Plan a session to go through student work on the Activity, with presentations of their brand cluster analysis, SWOT analysis and their publications' critiques.
  6. Review the learning objectives of the session.
