Recruitment and Selection in Travel and Tourism - Activity

Last session began the process of finding out about careers in the travel and tourism industry. It looked into how individuals can develop and progress in the industry. It also focused on people who have followed various routes into and through their careers in travel and tourism.

As part of last session, you were asked to choose two jobs within the industry on which to base your research. You will take this work a stage further in this session. You will be using the same sources as last session for this activity. This session's work is as follows:

  • To reduce your chosen jobs from two to one
  • To create a flowchart of the likely stages in recruiting and selecting for the job
  • To create an outline job description for this job
  • To write a person specification for the job

Finally, you should analyse your own suitability for the job chosen. This will involve you completing the self-assessment exercises produced in the information pack for the HAVE project (Group 3 tasks from last session).

Long straight road

It is unlikely that you have the appropriate experience and skills for the job of your choice. You will need to identify your training and development needs for you to carry out the job effectively. These could involve additional qualifications, part-time or vacation work that you could do before entering the workplace, and so on.

For higher grades, you should not only identify accurately the stages in recruitment and selection, and the training and development needs that you have if you were to do the job, but also create an action plan for securing the job you want in travel and tourism. This will mean being critical of your own suitability for the job you desire.

Be honest with yourself - it'll be in your interests in the end!
