Investigate the range of career opportunities in the Travel & Tourism industry - Lesson Plan

This resource is designed specifically for Unit 6 of the Edexcel BTEC National qualification 'Working in the Travel and Tourism Industry', although it will be of relevance to centres following other awarding bodies' programmes.

Aim

To begin work on Unit 6 'Working in Travel and Tourism' with a look at some key roles, entry requirements and career progression opportunities in the industry. In addition, it aims to encourage learners to assess their own development needs and map these to specific career paths in travel and tourism.

Learning objectives

By participating in this session, students should be able to:

  • Carry out research on career opportunities in the industry
  • Understand the entry requirements into and progression routes through two specific roles
  • Analyse their own strengths and weaknesses and begin work on a personal development plan aimed at entry into a travel and tourism career
  • Work collaboratively in small groups
  • Present findings to the whole group

Resources

Lesson structure

  1. Outline the key learning objectives of the session
  2. Go through the presentation
  3. Hand out the activity sheet
  4. Guide learners through the tasks.
  5. Discuss the tasks and divide the group into small working teams
  6. Select 'volunteers' to feed back each team's findings to the whole group
  7. Review the learning objectives of the session

Note that this activity should begin the process of career planning for each learner (where this has not already started). Later sessions will return to the issue of individual development plans, learning logs and self-assessment exercises. Learners should be encouraged to get involved in this process at the earliest opportunity; here is a good place to start!
