Pearson Education Materials
Economics (5th Edition) by John Sloman, University of the West of England
This is an updated edition (2003) of an already well-known text. It is appropriate for students doing economics, microeconomics, macro-economics and international economics modules. It is also suitable for professional courses and any further education courses in Economics.
The fifth edition retains many of the popular features of the previous edition, but has been extensively revised and updated to reflect changes and address new and contemporary issues. Features include:
- Full-page introductions and 'chapter maps'. These set the scene for the chapter and help students see how it is structured and how the various topics relate to each other.
- Web references are integrated throughout the text and highlighted by an icon. The student is referred to a comprehensive list of Web sites, compiled into an appendix at the back of the book.
- Boxes spread throughout the text with case studies, person profiles, institutional material, news items, contemporary and historical debates and issues, anecdotes and advanced topics.
- All key terms highlighted in the text where they first appear and defined at the foot of that page. Each term is also included in a glossary at the end of the text and highlighted in the index for quick reference.
- Increased use of examples drawn from around the world.
- Self-assessment questions are embedded in the text and further questions are given at the end of each chapter.
New to this edition:
- Key ideas highlighted and explained where they first appear. These ideas are key elements in the economist's 'toolkit' and whenever they recur later in the book, an icon appears in the margin. These help students to 'think like an economist'.
- The book is divided into six parts, each with a full-page introduction and 'part map'. This makes the structure more transparent and makes it easier for the student to navigate.
- An average of five additional cases per chapter on the book's Web site and referred to at the end of each chapter.
- New material on game theory, efficiency wages, capital markets, capital market efficiency and common property resources.
- The macro half has been revised and streamlined to reflect developments in macroeconomics.
- Many new boxes and examples throughout the book.
