Economics for Business (3rd Edition) by John Sloman and Mark Sutcliffe, University of the West of England

Economics for Business cover

This book is designed for undergraduate or post degree business students taking introductory courses in Economics. The starting point for the text is the study and practice of business, not economics. With this central principle guiding the topic coverage, the student is introduced only to economics which is relevant to them as business students.

  • Extensive supplementary support: The text is equipped with a Companion Web site and an Instructor's Resource CD-ROM.
  • A comprehensive index, including reference to all defined terms.
  • A wealth of interesting material and case studies, which show how economics can be used to understand real business situations.
  • Coverage of all major topics of economics, but also includes several specialist business chapters and sections (e.g. the business environment, marketing the product, growth strategies, the small-firm sector, multinational corporations, etc.).
  • Provides a balanced coverage of microeconomic, macroeconomic and international economic issues, with the emphasis on the economics and environment of business.
  • Web references at the end of each chapter.
  • FT Reports at the beginning of each section, which examine topical news stories.
  • A range of features to aid learning, including: definitions in the margin of all key terms; review questions; comprehensive Web appendix; chapter summaries; and technical terms highlighted clearly in the margin.

New to this edition:

  • Key ideas highlighted and explained where they first appear, and then referred to with an icon each time they are used later in the text. This helps students to see how subjects are fed together and speeds up their understanding.
  • 'Pause for thought' questions integrated throughout the text. These encourage more reflective learning. Answers are given on the Companion Website. Encourages students to reflect on what they have learnt and makes the learning process a more active one.
  • Fully updated, with many new examples and data throughout the text. These help students apply the economic theory to their other subjects and world of business in general. It makes learning economics more rewarding and interesting for the students.
  • New chapter on strategic management and new section on globalisation. Many other sections revised.
  • Extensive Web references given at the end of each part, all of which can be found from the book's excellent Companion Web site.
  • Full-colour design makes the text more attractive to students to read and easier to see the textbook's structure with its clearly highlighted examples and key issues.
