Essentials of Economics (3rd Edition) by John Sloman, University of the West of England

Essentials of economics cover

Essentials of Economics (3rd Edition), is an abridged version of John Sloman's main text, Economics (5th Edition). Some passages have been directly transcribed, while others have been extensively rewritten in order to provide a consistent coverage of only the core principles of economics and their applications. The book is about half the length of the parent text. It is suitable for lighter introductory courses, single semester courses or any short undergraduate level courses. It is also highly suitable for AS and A2 courses.

The third edition of this highly regarded and successful text retains many of the features of the second, but has also been extensively updated to reflect changes and address new and contemporary issues. It includes a number of important learning features:

  • Extensive supplementary support: The text is equipped with a Companion Web site and an Instructor's Resource CD-ROM.
  • WinEcon: Sloman software also available on a CD-ROM, so that WinEcon can be used in parallel with the book, giving students plenty of applications to practice what they are learning.
  • Attractive 2 colour design enables students to pick out key concepts highlighted in the text.
  • Review questions at the end of each chapter enable students to evaluate what they have learnt.
  • Numerous case studies engage students further by giving real examples, which will enable students to understand real business situations.
  • Key ideas highlighted and explained where they first appear and then referred to with an icon each time they are used later in the text.
  • 'Pause for thought' questions integrated throughout the text. These encourage more reflective learning. Answers are given on the companion website.
  • Glossary of key terms helps students to understand key concepts.
  • Can be used in conjunction with and alongside Economics (5th Edition), making it useful for mixed-ability classes.
  • Chapter openers give students an overview of the coming chapter, and provide useful orientation and background to the subject.
  • Extensive Web references at the end of each chapter. All of which can be found from the book's Companion Web site to encourage students to research more about the topic.
