Functional Areas of a Business - Learning Journal

Think back to your learning journal. Think about the ideas you have learned. What are the key ideas? What ideas do you still not understand? What do you need to do to fix this?

Using your information:

Ceramico is a small to medium-sized business manufacturing cups, saucers, mugs and other types of household pottery that has been operating for eight years. The business is a private limited company with five shareholders, all of whom are members of the same family. Two people from the family take the most active part in running the business. They employ 15 people in the business doing a range of different tasks but are now starting to experience difficulties in managing all the things that they want to do in order to meet customers needs.

The business is thinking of ways in which they can improve the efficiency of the business and how it can manage its affairs more effectively. It is considering two possible ways:

  1. Setting up an IT system to manage its administration including all its accounting procedures.
  2. Investing in a new training programme provided by an outside specialist firm to help the employees understand their roles more effectively and improve their productivity.

Task 7

Explain how each proposal would affect the functional areas of the business if it were introduced. Which of the two would you advise the business to invest in and why? (Remember that this second task is an evaluation question so use your skills developed in the 'talking heads' exercise here.)
