Introduction to Business Activity - Review and Learning Journal

Review

We have covered some of the basic issues surrounding business. You have been introduced to some new terms and ideas (concepts) and you should get into the habit of using these terms to describe the business issues you will be studying.

It is a really useful idea for you to do your own review of what you have covered and hopefully learned. Learning things is not just remembering facts and figures but being able to use the information you have covered to apply to new ideas. Below is a task that you can use to see if you can do this but before you do this task, try to set up a journal for yourself.

The Learning Journal

Your learning journal will be your way of writing down your thoughts about your work and what you have learned. It gives you time to sit back and reflect on things a bit! Biz/ed has provided a template for you which you can copy and use or you can devise your own. You should get into the habit of using this at least once a week not only to think about the resources we cover on Biz/ed but also about the work you do in your institution.

To get you started we have produced a sample of what you might write in relation to this topic area.

My Learning Journal
Name: Joe Bloggs
What are the key concepts I have covered?

This week we covered:
  • Primary, secondary and tertiary sectors
  • Public and private sector
  • Aims and Objectives
A summary of what I have covered:

We did some work on what businesses do! They are involved with some form of exchange - they offer something to someone and someone else buys it. Businesses have lots of different objectives - some want to make a profit, others want to get bigger, and some aim to provide a service to the public. To help understand these things we put businesses into different categories like primary, secondary and tertiary and public and private sector.
Things I am still not sure of:

I am still not sure of what the difference is between the public sector and the private sector - it's a bit confusing!
What do I need to do to overcome these uncertainties?

I am going to see Mrs Brown next week to spend ten minutes going over it. On Saturday I am going shopping with my friends so I am going to look around me as we go and make a mental note of the different business things I see and when I get home I am going to write them down in a list under private sector and public sector to show Mrs Brown. I will also look up the definition again in the Biz/ed Glossary. (http://www.bized.co.uk/glossary/glossary.htm)
