Accounting and Finance - Publishers

As the Web is a powerful publishing medium, it is not surprising to find that most of the publishers of material that relates to accounting and finance have a presence on the Web. In many cases this will include publication lists, opportunities to buy materials online, samples of articles or complete text of materials and so on. As many publishers were slow to accept the inevitability of this publication channel, the range of useful material on these sites varies dramatically, but the industry is adding good sites fast. In the case of both of the main publishers' sites selected below, attempts to make novel use of the Web to support customers can be seen. It is likely that the other publishers will follow these examples with developments on their own sites in due course. Unsurprisingly, the highest concentration of chargeable material amongst these sites appears in this section.

International Thomson Business Press

International Thomson Business Press (ITBP) is part of one of the largest global publishing houses. It has put what appear to be large resources into the development of its Web site, which is constantly receiving improvements and additional materials as it, like all the other publishers, seeks the ideal model for use of this new technology.

This site is worthy of special mention because, in addition to the usual features found on all of the publishers' sites, such as catalogues, online ordering and advertising materials from the books currently in print, it has attempted to break from the basic mould followed by other publishers of producing electronic versions of their paper catalogues. ITBP provides a new spin on the materials it presents with a Virtual School of Accounting and Finance. Whilst this idea is not entirely unique and novel, and whilst it contains much of the same catalogue and sample materials all the others display more conventionally, it is a much better use of the interactive capabilities of the Web than other publishers have made to date. The site is also beginning to have new resources added to it that are not generally produced in paper formats to help the student get the most from ITBP's paper-based texts.

The Virtual School is separated into areas that would be in common with a physical Accounting and Finance School: a lecture theatre, a library, a coffee shop, exam hall, noticeboard and a staff room. The producers of the Web site have attempted to locate different materials in each of these rooms as might be appropriate for each setting. For example, lecture support materials such as a brief dictionary are in the lecture hall and a discussion area and links to online business magazines are in the library.
