Accounting and Finance - Government

National governments were amongst the first bodies to make use of the Web in any significant way. Because they have a remit to provide information to citizens about their actions and to collect citizens' responses, the Web was quickly spotted as a useful tool to reach many people in a cheap, efficient and equitable fashion. Huge amounts of government generated data are available on the Web, particularly US government data, as US copyrights to data are more flexible than in Europe and they find their way onto the Web more quickly.

UK Online

The UK government provides a huge range of information on the Web. This information is categorised by the department or local entity which controls the information. This is the starting place to find UK government information. For access to an A-Z index of government departments and organisations, follow the link to open.gov. The site is well indexed, using various categories, including: a What's New list of things that have changed recently on the site (in reverse chronological order); an organisational index enabling users to access particular government organisations easily; a functional index to access the site by government function; and a general search facility that allows for structured or more open-ended keyword searching.
