Business Economics - CompetitionUnderstanding market structures and the way they react to competition is essential for businesses. There are many sites currently available which look at different perspectives on competition, including those of consumers, government and industry. The organisations cited below offer a starting point for finding Web resources about competition. Competition CommissionEstablished in 1948, the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) was the UK body responsible for investigating matters which come under the 1980 Competition Act and related legislation. The MMC has no powers to initiate investigation and therefore no choice as to which inquiries it undertakes. The name has now changed along with various aspects of its role. The MMC is now known as the Competition Commission. The Inquiries section contains summary details of all the inquiries since 2000 in an archive, with various documents available online, and the Current Inquiries section gives details of their ongoing investigations. Further ReferencesCompetition Bureau, Industry Canada This is the Canadian government department responsible for overseeing the application and administration of the Competition Act. Contains useful consumer related advice as well as information aimed at businesses. Good for comparative work. The FTC enforces anti-trust and consumer protection laws and aims to ensure that markets are competitive and eliminate all instances of unfair practice. The site focuses particularly on anti-trust/competition issues, through its Bureau of Competition. This gives a useful global perspective on how competitive nations are in relation to one another.
