What is podcasting?
Podcasting is a method of publishing audio broadcasts (usually mp3 files) via the Internet. It allows users to subscribe so they automatically receive new broadcasts as they are published.
These audio broadcasts are called podcasts as they were originally intended for use on iPods. However, podcasts can be downloaded and listened to on a variety of devices: PCs, mobile phones, PDAs, mp3 players, as well as iPods.
Why is Biz/ed creating podcast content?
The aim of Biz/ed's podcasting is to offer our content to students in an alternative medium to suit different learning styles. Each of the broadcasts is transcribed, so students can just use the audio content, or refer to the written material at the same time if they wish to.
Just think of the flexibility and time saving possibilities - instead of being chained to their PCs, students can listen and learn while on the bus, walking to the shops, or even doing the washing up!
How can I sample some of the content?
Biz/ed offers the following content as podcasts:
- Selected In the News stories are available as podcasts on a weekly basis during UK term time. You can listen to sample content by listening to the previous broadcasts. The feed location for In the News podcasts is:
http://www.bized.co.uk/dataserv/chron/podcasts.rss - Travel and tourism materials. Get our take on the travel industry in bite-sized portions, for you to listen to wherever you are! The feed location for Travel & Tourism podcasts is:

How do I get started?
- Step 1
The first thing to do is to bear in mind your bandwidth and the impact this may have on your ability to download the audio files. If you are downloading the audio files through a broadband connection of 256Kb or higher, such as a school or university network, you should not experience any difficulties. However, if you are using a dial-up connection, you should be aware that the files will take a few minutes to download. The podcasts are on average 1 MB, so each will take around 2 minutes to download through a 56Kb modem. - Step 2
The second thing you need to do is download some software that will enable you to receive the new broadcasts automatically. The most common software is iPodder, though a list of alternatives for different platforms including PCs, Macs, PDAs and mobile phones is available from podcastingnews.com. - Step 3
The next step is to paste the feed location from the list above into your podcasting software. - Step 4
You are now set up to receive the broadcasts - when a new broadcast is published, the software will automatically download it. You can listen to it on your PC, or transfer it to your iPod, mp3 player, PDA or mobile phone.
