Podcast and Interactive Questions - Quality (01 Apr) This podcast covers the issue of quality. A salmonella outbreak in the United States led to 700 people falling ill and has been linked to the deaths of up to 9 people. The root cause of the problem appears to be lax quality control methods at a business which processes peanuts. The resulting products were bought by, amongst others, Kellogg, who had to pull products from sale as a result. The cost to it of the recall is estimated at around $70 million. Could and should they have done more to make sure that quality control through its supply chain was improved?

BTEC Retail Unit 5 (16 Jan) Any retail business relies on customers for its survival. To encourage customers to use a retail outlet the business has to know who its potential customers might be and what they want. Understanding, identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer needs is at the heart of marketing. Promotion deals with how retail organizations make customers aware of the products they have for sale and where they can be bought. This unit covers these two key areas of retail business.

Break-even analysis: Debts, revenues and costs (19 Nov) Students often confuse the purpose and use of break-even analysis and further assume that at some point every firm will break-even and move into profit. This case study is designed to show that this is not always the case. It also highlights the limitations that firms might face in trying to adjust their cost and revenue bases to try and improve their break-even position.
