Decimals

'Dec' relates to the number 'ten'. Decimals are numbers expressed in denominations of tenths. Decimal fractions therefore relate to parts of a whole expressed as tenths or multiples of tenths. 0.13 is the same as 13⁄100; 0.5 is the same as 5⁄10 and so on.

When carrying out operations using decimals it is important to ensure that the order is kept accurate to avoid making mistakes. When multiplying decimals, you can ignore the decimal points in the question, treat the numbers as ordinary whole numbers and multiply appropriately. When you get the answer, you can put in the decimal point by counting how many decimal places there were in the question and that is the number in the answer.

For example, treat the problem 10.362 x 0.127 as 10,362 x 127. The answer to this is 1,315,974. There were 6 decimal places in the problem so there will be 6 in the answer - 1.315974.
